These days, there’s a dietary supplement for everything. Want strong bones, clear skin, regular bowel movement, a good night’s sleep, or sharp memory? A trip to your nearest health store offers a wide variety of pills and powders for these and every other specific condition you can think of.  

Indeed, it’s a vast landscape of dietary supplements out there, but you don’t have to be confused or overwhelmed by it. Simply consider one that offers multiple benefits to your body. Not only is it more efficient (imagine taking one pill or powder versus several supplements spread out in the day), it also gives you more for your money. 

 

For centuries in Eastern cultures, Moringa oleifera—that’s the humble malunggay to Filipinos—has been the go-to solution for a slew of health-related concerns. Boasting 92 vitamins and minerals and 46 antioxidants in one tree alone, this fast-growing plant that thrives in tropical climates easily lives up to its reputation as a miracle vegetable and superfood. 

Though often associated with lactating mothers, given its higher-than-high calcium content (the 353mg of calcium in 100g of malunggay leaves is more than what gabi leaves, mung beans, squash, and camote tops can offer), and calcium content of Moringa powder of 1230mg per 100g. Moringa is loaded with myriad nutrients that address more than 300 health issues—from skin and hair problems to serious diseases like diabetes and cancer. With moringa’s antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and even antidepressant properties, there is a long list of what moringa can help with when it comes to supporting your body’s ability to function optimally. 

 

Here are five of the many ways it does.  

It can supply daily nutrient needs. Moringa leaves may help provide the recommended dietary intake of vitamin C, which helps keep infections and illnesses including colds and flu at bay; calcium, to help strengthen bones and teeth, and prevent osteoporosis; and potassium, to improve how the brain and nerves function. It has also been found to contain higher amounts of vitamin A, iron, and magnesium – all the nutrients required to help rid us of tiredness and fatigue.

It balances the hormones. Women experiencing hormonal fluctuations due to menopause may find some relief in the miracle plant. In a 2014 studying involving 80 postmenopausal women, moringa supplements were credited for the women’s increased antioxidants and decreased oxidative stress. 

In another case study, this one conducted in 1997 and 1998, pregnant and nursing women took moringa leaf powder to prevent or treat malnutrition. Not only did their children maintain or increase their birth weight, but the women also noted a spike in their milk production. Moringa stimulates the endocrine system, which increases secretions of oxytocin and prolactin, the hormones responsible for lactation.  

 

It promotes bone and joint health. Besides the aforementioned calcium, moringa oleifera contains phosphorus, which is key to the formation of bones and teeth. Together, these nutrients fortify the bones and repair damaged ones. Meanwhile, initial studies show that quercetin (an antioxidant flavonol found in the flower of moringa) and the anti-inflammatory properties from the leaves are promising in helping alleviate arthritic pain. 

It moderates blood pressure and blood sugar levels. High blood pressure (or hypertension, which is a systolic of 140mm/hg or higher and a diastolic of 90mm/hg or higher) can lead to a life-threatening stroke. Moringa has a number of nutrients that may help bring down the numbers. Quercetin proves a versatile antioxidant, as studies reveal its ability to decrease blood pressure. So too can isothiocyanate and niazimicin, compounds that keep blood pressure stable by preventing the thickening of arteries. 

Diabetes (or high blood sugar) increases your risk of developing hypertension. In a 2010 study, 8gm of moringa powder was taken daily by a group of patients diagnosed with type-2 diabetes. Forty days later, the experiment yielded a 28% decrease of fasting blood sugar and 26% decrease in post-meal blood glucose among the study’s participants. Terpenoids, a compound found in moringa oleifera, stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin, which is helpful for diabetics. 

 

It aids the digestive system. Numerous properties in moringa can help address various stomach concerns. Its fiber acts as a laxative that makes constipation a thing of the past. Moringa is also an antiulcer agent that decreases acidity in gastric ulcers. And its high vitamin B content and antibiotic properties may help resolve any issues caused by bad bacteria in the gut. 

Even the liver and kidney can benefit from a diet supplemented with moringa. The superfood is full of antioxidants that help protect these hard-working organs from damage by toxic substances like certain medications. Regular intake of moringa triggers the production of healthy liver enzymes and helps lessen the growth of painful kidney stones.
